How we started

Did you know that according to recent statistics, 41% of Cleveland Jewish households are struggling to make ends meet?  In 2011, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland ran a population study that revealed a surprising level of economic instability in our Jewish community.  19% of households live at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Income guidelines, more than 50% higher than other similar communities.  Even with government assistance, these families often struggle to meet their basic needs.

The Jewish Federation of Cleveland, upon learning this statistic, founded a Task Force on Financial Distress. Their recommendation: Establish a Chesed Center. Chesed, for kindness.

In collaboration with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, we identified a neighborhood in Cleveland Heights with an underserved population.  In partnership with exceptional community stakeholders, the Cleveland Chesed Center opened its doors in March 2016.

A member agency of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, the Chesed Center is addressing food insecurity in our community by distributing kosher food to families at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. The center also provides clothing, household necessities, and personal care items to families in need.

This work is life-changing. And, it’s because of you. Thank you – to each and every one of you who made a donation this year. You are the reason we are able to do this kind of incredible work.  Please consider donating today.

We rely on donations from the community to keep our ship running.  Thanks to our donors, we are able to make the lives our neighbors, teachers, and friends who are struggling just that much easier!
